am
still on the hunt for heirloom turkey hatching eggs. I have found a lady on Salt
Spring Island who has some, but if I ship them by bus, they could be down to 50%
hatchability. I would like Bourbon Reds, Blue Slate and Sweetgrass.
Never again am I going to get Nicholas Whites. I did not want them in the first place, but my guy wanted them as he thinks the white turkeys dress out better. I have had 7 problems with 11 of them (4 dead) and the Bronze are all just fine. My guy now agrees we will not be getting Nicholas Whites again. I called the hatchery today and am on standby. They all seem to be having rectal prolapses and then the other white chicks are pecking at them, they then bleed and then they die. I am not impressed.

Picture Above: 2 Bourbon Red Toms and 2 Slates, which are the varieties I
want to raise
I got the
incubator running again to get it regulated for a higher temperature. I will let
it sit for 24 hours to stabilize and we will set about 8 dozen eggs in there
tomorrow morning. The last batch of chicks are doing well.
The man with the portable sawmill was here this morning. He and my boyfriend talked about how to cut the logs while I went to do the morning chores (and broke an egg in my pocket). The man may drop off the mill this afternoon. Soon we can have barns?
My guy went off to go see about a backhoe and pipe for the line from the new well, so we have have water to the house. So we can have a full bath, run laundry.. maybe someday, have a shower!! After the barn is build, the waterline will head up there with a hydrant, so we will not have to pack hundreds of gallons of water each day for the hogs, chickens, horses etc. We will be living in the lap of luxury!!
I have a trade show tomorrow for the magazine. I love going out and talking to the people. We printed up more of the Spring 2007 issue as we were sold out of the first run, I also need to print up more Summer 2006 as there are only 2 copies left and a lady ordered one this morning.
I got a call from one of my neighbors down the road and she said it was snowing at her house. We have partly cloudy skies here. 30-some days until we can plant the garden. She got her onions in today however.
