July 24, 2007

esterday Mary and I ran to town in my truck and picked up 1,200 pounds of feed for between our two farms. That was kinda the highlight of the day. Then I puttered about the house here and there. Amy came to do a couple loads of laundry.

The last couple nights I have been taking note of what is in our meals and it is nice that almost 100% is starting to come from our land again.

Sunday night we had the last chicken we grew last year. When we rotated stuff in the freezer the other day, we found it and one of the last bags of yellow carrots from the 2006 garden and salad from the 2007 garden.

Last night we made hamburgers. The meat was from our cow, the onion and lettuce from our garden... and we decided we wanted an egg on it, so those were from our hens. I made the buns, but we did not grow the wheat for the flour. Yet...

I did note yesterday that the barley is starting to show grain as well as the occasional oat here and there on its side of the garden.

It rained like mad again last night. I have not yet been outside to see what good it did anything or if I need to water the garden and flowerbeds today. My main chore today is to move alot of rocks. I have a huge amount of round river rock I want to lay up next to the house under the eves and in the dripline. They have been sitting at the edge of the driveway by the cabin for over a year now and it is time to move them. The former project with them has been changed so they are going to another use now.

The other day I was talking about everyone going out and making a difference in the world. I just learned about one such young woman just now. Savannah Walters is a kid who is making a difference. At the age of 9, she became concerned about proposals to drill for oil in the Arctic, and she learned that the U.S. could save as much oil as would be produced by the new drilling if drivers simply pumped up their car tires to proper inflation levels. Check out her site Pump 'm Up.

I am heading out now to check my tires as I forgot to at my last fillup.
