June 26, 2007

his morning Monica, her son and I went out to the burn areas from the 80,000 acre fires we had last summer to go get Morel mushrooms. It was a delightful day. Next time we shall have to take a picnic.

Picture Above: This is just a wee bit of where the huge fires we had last summer were. We wore clothes we could get alot of soot on.. and we looked like chimney sweeps soon enough.

Picture Below: Monica's son who decided Morel hunting is like a treasure hunt and wants to go again. I think he is so good at finding them as he is lower to the ground than his mom or me.

Picture Above: I found a small bunch of cattle which had been trapped by the fires and died. There were at least 6 jawbones fairly near each other. We found the bones of many more animals

Picture Below: This is Monica's second mushroom all day. She was finding everything but.... Oh well.. more practice Monica.. Friday?

Picture Above: I felt metal under my feet and pulled up a leg hold trap. I apparently was on someone's former trapline. With the first trap I found, I found the second one within a foot of the other one. I brought them in. Though they are still probably in working order, I will use them to hang on the walls of the writing cabin. I am REALLY glad they had been sprung before I stepped on them.

Picture Below: Handles burnt away, we found these brand new shovels leaned against the remains of a tree as a reminder of the brave people who helped fight this fire last July. It looked like the shovels were still brand new. The firefighters must have been pushed out of this area as the fires came their way. Thank you to all the firefighters who came to help us from all over Canada, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico and Australia..

|Picture Above: One of the many vehicles, travel trailers and homes we found which had been caught in the fire. Boys being boys, Monica's son wanted to go into this fire victim of a truck.

Picture Below: But, although there was so much destruction around us, there was new life creeping up everywhere, such as this nest in the trucks glovebox.
