May 19, 2007

woke up to many fuzzy faces peering at me from each shelf. We have at least 60 hatched and more still hatching.  I had to call Mary over to bring a box and her assistance in moving all these guys to the brooder up at the barns.

Today is a big day at fencing. We have a crew of 5 to do work on it. We do not have our other large teenager borrowed person to help, which is a major loss, but we will make do.

The weather does not look too lovely, but at least it will be a cooler day.

Evening Update:

Not long after we started fencing, we saw a momma moose with her brand new wobbly calf jogging across Mary's upper fields. This is the first moose she has ever seen. It was the youngest moose calf I had ever seen. They are a beautiful reddish-brown colour. The momma jumped the fence and the baby obviously had not gone through a fence before as it hit a wire and was launched back several feet. After a couple tried it made it through. We also saw Bald Eagles which is a everyday occurrence over there and 11 of the rare White Pelicans.

I called a friend of ours from Mary's and lured him (no pun intended) to come over to help fence if he was not doing anything better and bring his fishing pole as the creek had several fish in it.

Between 2 fencing crews, Mary and I got 7/8's of her 'backyard done' in page wire and we will finish it up tomorrow. The guys got 4 strands of barbwire done on the front pasture. Then a hurricane force wind and rain storm came through, with lightening, so we quit for the day. So instead of going inside like normal people, I went to look for Morels and the rest of everyone (and Greyhounds) went to go look at the beaver pond. Our friend with his fishing pole.

The guys walked the creekline back to the house and caught 2 fish which they put back as they were spawners. I found one Morel. But it was a nice walk on a blustery day.
