ecause
we planted half the garden yesterday, it froze last night. Am I surprised? I
think
with
a couple more connectors and 6 more hoses, I can plant the rest of the garden
this evening.
There a few things I did not put on the chart of where I planted things, such as the "GA- Luttrell" Barley and a couple other grains which I am trialing this year. The garden rows are 50 feet wide. The corn is planted in corn, beans, squash and then fennel at the ends of the rows.
I also had a pleasant surprise and gift from a OHG Team member I have worked with for a long time, who unexpectedly died a week or so ago. Last year she gave me some of her "Rattlesnake" beans, which I had forgotten about and found in my seed bag yesterday. I planted half out into the corn. If you save seed, please share them. I feel these bean seeds are a living memory of Debby and her love of gardening.
Today is a trip to the farm store to get chick starter, chicken layer, hog grower, more pasture seed and pick morels on the way there. With fuel prices, we truck-pool to town to save fuel costs and so my truck is volunteered today to get the feed for Amy and me. My guy is calling for our hogs today and we should be getting them this week. Which means I need to pick up a bale of straw as well for them.
The
mosquitoes are back in full force for another year. I did not really notice them
until late in the evening as we were just finishing up the garden for the day.
Time to bring out my favorite bug spray. In the States it is not that expensive,
but it is here. When mom came and visited me last summer, she brought us up a
case of the stuff.. Buzz Away, has no DEET in it, which unfortunately most bug
sprays have in them. In side-by-side tests while we were fishing, the mosquitoes
& Blackflies (which hurt really bad when they bite you) stayed away from me
and were tormenting my fishing buddy instead. I highly recommend it.
We had alot of teenage football player at our house tonight to play the other game they like.. Slo-Pitch and my guy talked them in to digging holes for me where we want the fruit trees planted. So our Red Gravenstein was planted into the ground this afternoon. As soon as breakup is over, I will get 3-4 more fruit trees.
I went over to Amy's and helped her plant her garden this mid day and then she came here and we got another couple rows done.. and we found out that our calf from last year, got out of the fence and tromped through my newly planted garden *ARGH!*
