December 12, 2008

alling snow when I woke up this morning. Bren went into work to work on his own projects and do a little bit of overseeing today, but he will have a short day. The guys at the shop are all ahead, so they get a looked-forward-to day off. A couple of them have been snowed in all week and have not been able to make it to work anyhow. Bren is working on buildings pocket doors for the bathroom, laundry room and kitchen. He told me that he is wanting to make them LTD style, but with wooden panels. That should look nice.

Dinner was pretty much made out of leftovers last night and it is one of my favorite soups. It will be one of the recipes in the upcoming issue, but it was so pretty in color that I had to post it in color somewhere. The bread sticks I made had molasses in them as I was being too lazy to dig for the sugar bucket under all the other buckets which are squashed into a corner of the bedroom currently.

It is going to get cold:
Tonight:
Wind northwest 40 km/h gusting to 60. Low minus 19C/-2F. Cold wind chill minus 33/-27F. Risk of frostbite.

Saturday:
Cloudy with sunny periods. Clearing late in the day. Wind northwest 40km/h gusting to 60. Temperature steady near -20C/-4F. Cold wind chill minus 34C/-29F, Risk of frostbite.

The rest of the week is a daily high of -17C/1F.

The whole day is devoted to magazine writing again. I have been able to do more on it in the last week or so than I have in the last many months. That makes me very happy.

Today's Act of Green:

Caulk, Seal or Weatherstrip Drafty Areas and Windows

In the winter, you can seal your windows (older windows are often poorly sealed) using weather stripping caulk sealant. It will seal the cracks between the window and window frame. This type of caulking can be peeled off when you don’t need it anymore. It comes in regular caulk tubes. It’s nearly invisible when in place and it comes off easily without damaging paint or clear finishes. Another option is storm windows. They act as a wind buffer, and the air trapped between the storms and the prime windows acts as insulation. You should do this at work and home.

I decided to post a daily 'Act of Green' for the rest of December. Not as fun maybe as "The Cinnamon Bear" posts I did the last Christmas season, but more important.

Afternoon Update: 4:33pm

Just a few minutes ago I found out, one whom I would have called a friend and who was a colleague of mine, died last night. He was also an editor for a newspaper and much better than most. He was one of those people that make small towns interesting and he in is own way made our area so much better. E. had a wonderful gift for putting words together.

I wish I could have been able to talk to him once more, even in email, to thank him for all his hand holding and encouragement when I took on this job as an editor. He said to me that the frustration of learning the ropes of putting a paper together would fade and I would be good at what I did. I loved his sense of humor, his wisdom and his goodness. My heart goes out to his wife C. and  the rest of his family & friends.

Written for a friend of his, I think this poem is apt for E. as well....

Against the dark we set a candle,
Like the light your memory brings every day,
With all our love for your kindred soul,
we miss you more than words can say.
