January 19, 2008

fter work yesterday, I rushed home, plowed the driveway, loaded up my dogs and dogsled and went out on trails. It was rather warm and the snow soft, but at least I got to go out. I got back just after dark. Offloaded all the dogs and all but one went right back to their house. One I had to track down, but he has always wandered aimlessly around checking things out and pretending he is hard of hearing.

I got a seed catalog from Heirloom Acres in the mail last night when I picked up the mail . I spent a few minutes with my pen with that catalog. I have been getting itchy to start planting things, but it will be until April when I can start seeds. If you order from Heirloom Acres, tell Thom that tenzicut sent you, they know who I am. They are really an awesome seed company to deal with, I highly recommend them.

Along with the seed catalog and a Canadian Tire flier, I also received a hatchery catalog from the chick hatchery I had so many problems with last May and whom I have sworn never to purchase from again. They have dropped the majority of the pure breeds they did carry in the past. They now only really carry 6 purebreds, some hybrid/crossbreds, 2 types of turkeys, 1 pheasant and have completely dropped all of the bantams.

The heritage breeds that they do offer this year are $10 per day old chick (minimum order is 25 chicks) and cannot be attached to any other order of chicks you purchase which means double the shipping costs as well. I suspect that many people may not be ordering from them this year and go elsewhere. I know I will be after they failed to honor their guarantee when 11 turkeys (at $8 each) last year died from prolapse of the vent.  From what the owner of the hatchery told me last year when I had to call him so many times about the horrible Nicholas White turkeys, is they do not carry much of the breeding stock, instead they order most of the hatching eggs up here to Canada from Texas.

On a happy note, there was also a very cool request for me today. A photographer wants to team up with me to write for a major worldwide magazine for an article. The excellent news is it doesn't have to be done right away, which is good. But to me it is a great honor just to be asked. Think National Geographic type magazine. More on that as soon as we know what issue it will be in. Frankly, I am in awe.
