13th November 2009
Friday the 13th. They tend to be some of my better days. We shall see if today will bring something exciting, like a HOUSE!! But it is being typical Oregon and it is raining, I am not used to the continious grey and rain. At my former farm, it mostly rained at night other than a couple weeks in the spring and fall. And when it snowed, it did its thing and then was usually sunny. I believed I had 1,000 more hours of sunlight up north than here.
Yesterday as I was nursing my baby in my upper bedroom loft, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye on the neighbor's roof of something landing. I had my camera just within reach and took a photo of this fellow, whom I think is a young Blue Heron (or a Little Blue Heron -- not sure yet), which are common here in the Willamette Valley. I just normally don't see them on roofs.

The largest and most widespread heron in North America, the Great Blue Heron can be found commonly in many areas of North America. At my former farm I had HUNDREDS of Sandhill Cranes fly for hours overhead while they 'banded up' to head south in the fall. During nesting season I had a pair or two lurking around and you could hear them calling. In the last 9 years, I have only seen this and one other heron.
